Sonic Streams is a unique and exciting project that enables students from across the globe to explore and research the impact of sound on themselves and their local built environment. To share their ideas, recordings, sound compositions and research findings through our online Education Research Portal and Student Sound Portal.
Together with the Tool Kit, teachers and students can explore the following questions:
Sound can powerfully affect the human body and the way we feel. Can sound aid the healing process
and promote wellbeing?
Noisy and busy urban environments - schools, colleges, and hospitals, for instance, can also raise
stress levels. Can we change the real life impact of environments through altering sound content?
With the support of the Tool Kit, students will develop creative ways to scientifically research the effects of sound and to share their findings.
For Students to:
Become researchers and sound designers/artists and to participate in the Sonic Streams programme
Creatively research the effect of sound on the human body and the environments they inhabit in the
context of sound as a tool for health and healthy environments and to share their findings
The individual student’s journey through sound, their soundtracks, and research findings will be shared through the Sonic Streams Tool Kit’s online Student Sound Journals.
For Teachers/Lecturers to:
Integrate cross-curriculum subjects: working creatively with science, sound and ICT
Achieve the skills and knowledge to support creative sound compositions using technology
Administer and lead online learning and networking
For Schools /Colleges to:
Build an identity with the creative and science communities and with other schools nationally and internationally
Build relationships with creative and science/health organisations
Support cross-subject teaching throughout the programme
Discover and promote new approaches to learning through collaboration and sharing
To Enable Students to:
Learn about the science of sound, its impact on the body and build environment
Develop ideas and sound work that could potentially be used as therapeutic tools for the individual or installed to create healthy sonic environments
Record, edit, and transform audio sound tracks using ICT
Develop and undertake creative scientific experiments to evaluate physiological and emotional impact sound
Explore and use appropriate research evaluation methods
Broaden learning and experiences, through team work and online sharing
To Enable Teachers/Tutors to:
Work with other subject teachers or within other subject areas and recognise the potential for cross-subject work
Be capable of recording and transforming sounds using their school technology facilities and have the confidence and aesthetic knowledge to guide students in composition using technology
Incorporate e-learning initiatives into their teaching
To Enable Schools/Colleges to:
Create new working relationships with participating arts and health organisations, partner schools and colleges
Support staff from different subject backgrounds to achieve a single creative outcome
Incorporate and promote new learning approaches to teaching
Promote health and wellbeing among students, staff and wider education community
Students will:
Create their own sounds compositions that will impact the listener physiologically or physically
Undertake a sound experiment to evaluate the physiological or physical effects of your sound work within your school/college or appropriate environment of their choosing
Gain a platform for their sound compositions and research findings through the Student Sound Journals
Become an active research member of the Sonic Streams programme, by engaging with other student’s research
Teacher/lecturer will:
Gain knowledge and skills to support students to create their own sounds compositions that will impact
the listener physiologically or physically
Gain knowledge and skills to support students undertake a sound experiment and evaluate the
physiological or physical effects of their sound work within your school/college or appropriate environment of their choosing
Support the online platform for their student’s sound compositions and research findings through administrating Student Sound Journals
Take an active role in the Education Research Portal, engaging with the wider education network and promoting the student’s and school’s creative research outcome
Schools/Colleges will:
Gain a platform for their student’s sound compositions and research findings through the Student Sound Journals
Support participation staff to take an active role in the Education Research Portal, engaging with the wider education network and promoting the student’s and school’s creative research outcome
Promote enquiry into sound and health within their Schools/College and potentially used student experiments and Sound journals to facilitated broader discussion of wellbeing of their students and even their own school building
Schools and colleges have the option to share their ideas and research finding on the Education Research Portal and there is the further option to share student Sound Journal between schools consenting schools. Please see ‘Education Research Portal and Student Sound Journals’ PDF resource for further information on these options.
Online Student Sound Journal network will be for two age ranges: 16 and under and over 16 years of age.
