Research as Education

The Education Research Portal will be LIVE from the 11th December 2008.

FACT, Andrew Curran & sonic education specialists, have collaborated with students to research the impact of sound on the human body.

Participants have researched the effect of sound on the human body and the environments they inhabit, they have explored sound as a tool for health and healthy environments. The have developed ideas and sound work that could be potentially used as therapeutic tools and installed to create healthy sonic environments, which can be listen to and view on their research journals.

Sonic Streams involved participating students from Holly Lodge Girls’ College and West Derby Comprehensive School and students form City College Sound Technology Department in the role of young researchers, forming part of the scientific research team, linking directly to the projects new science research.

We used a variety of methods from creative workshops and discussions to practical workshops and learning new skills that can intrigue and inspire the students. Engaging in creative new media arts activity to explore the impact of sound on people and their environment with professional artists and leading scientists.

Real life science experiments and the direct use of this material, makes this a unique and exciting education project. As much about researching as about what comes out of the research – the excitement about being on the cutting edge of science and art impacts every element of Sonic Streams.

Students to produce their own soundscapes, in response to what they learned about the effects of sound on the human body and the environment around them.

Visit the students Sound Journal [link] and Listen to their recordings, read the experiences and view at their ideas.

During the project we developed the online learning resource the 'Sonic Streams: Tool Kit'
